East India Company Rule
East India Company gained enormous wealth from India, especially with collecting taxes. It set up a law code and court system, and gained more land. Some of this land included Bengal, the wealthiest Indian state. -
The Sepoy Rebellion
The British order a law that required sepoys to fight in foreign lands. Due to religious beliefs, the Hindus refused. Fighting broke out near the city of Delhi, and spread quickly. British eventually put down the uprising. -
Mohandas Gandhi (Principles He Fought For)
Developer of sayagraha (a practive of nonviolent resistance). His ideas were rooted from Hindu beliefs and Christian practices. Gandhi was influenced through the ideas of civil disobedience and wanted to "conver the wrongdoer". -
Formation of INC
A group formed for change in India. Members were made up of Hindus who lived in the cities. I called for gradual change and urged Britain to open up more jobs for Indians. -
Formation of Muslim League
Formed to combat teh increasing popularity of Hindu nationalism. Founded under the leadership of Muhammed Ali Jinnah. -
Salt March
In protest, Gandhi led followers over a 200-mile march to the coast. Over 50,000 people joined and broke the law by making salt from the ocean. All 50,000, including Gandhi, were arrested by British officers. -
Quit India Campaign
This was an movement organized by Gandhi and other Congress members. Tey urged Indians to follow a policy of non-cooperation with the British. They also pushed for a larger following of civil disobedience. -
Hindu-Muslim Conflict
Started due to the Hindu Congress and Muslim League not agreeing on same beliefs. Muslims demanded a seperate Muslim nation, due to the fact that they were scared that they would not be treated equally in a Hindu ruled state. More differences continued to increase the tension between the groups. -
Indian Independence Act
The act ended British rule in India. Also included a partition of Indian subcontinent into two seperate and independent nations. One was the Hindu dominated India and another was the Muslim majority Pakistan. -
Gandhi Assassinated
During following months of independence, Gandhi help prayer meetings where he recited verses from the Bhagavad-Gita, The Koran, and the Bible. Five months after independence, Gandhi was shot by a Hindu extremist. His reasoning for murder was that Gandhi had betrayed his own people.
