Events Leading to the Civil War

  • Importation of Slaves into US is Outlawed

    Congress abolishes the slave trade into the US. It is now against the law to bring new slaves into the country but ofcourse smugglers kept the buisness alive after this ruling.
  • Tallmadge Amendment

    Proposed by James Talmadge as a solution to the Missouri contraversy. States that Missouri should be accepted as a slve state but the children of the current slaves shall become free at age 25, and forbids any new slaves brought into Missouri. It does not pass.
  • The Missouri Compromise

    Passes and states that no state above a certain line can become a slave state, excluding Missouri. Maine is admitted as a free state to keep the balance.
  • Nat Turner’s Rebellion

    Slave revolt led by slave Nat Turner in Virginia. The group of slaves killed somewhere between 55 to 65 making it the deadliest slave revolt in American history.
  • Tariff of 1832

    Protectionist tariff designed to protect the industry in the North. The South was very unhappy with this as it did not benefit them. South Carolina tried to nullify it but Andrew Jackson sent an army down to the state to get them to comply.
  • Gag Resolution

    Ruling that tabled all discussion of slavery and its abolition in Congress. It had to be renewed every year and it wasn't unil 1844 that it was finally voted down.
  • Underground Railroad is Formed

    It was a network of secret routes and passages to the North from the South for runaway slaves with safehouses along the way. Reached its height from 1850 to 1860.
  • The Wilmot Proviso

    Proposed by David Wilmot of Pennsylvanis, it aimed to eliminate slavery in the new land the US had obtained in the Mexican War.
  • The Compromise of 1850

    Passed in 1850, it was a series of bills that admitted California as a free state, established popular soverinty in Utah and New Mexico, and ended slave trade in Washington DC
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, it was an anit-slavery book that showed how Christain love can overcome slavery. Laid the groundwork for the Civil War.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Proposed by Steven Douglas, this act expanded popular soverignty to these two states. This led to much violence in the two states to determine the decision.

    Bleeding Kansas

    Result of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, it was a series of violent attacks led by John Brown on slave owners in Kansas to promote the Topeka/Lawerence government which outlawed slavery.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Supreme court decision that stated a slave owner could take their slaves into western territories and still hold ownership to them. Dredd Scott sued for his freedom when he and his master moved to a free state but the supreme court turned it down.
  • South Carolina Suceeds

    South Carolina suceeds from the Union and was the first to join the Confederacy in response to the election of Abraham Lincoln. Thoughts of sucession were not neew in the state and some had been calling for it years prior.
  • Abraham Lincoln is Elected President

    Those from the South were so against his policies, he wasn't even on the ballot in the deep south. The south had been threatening sucession for awhile if the reublicans won the election. And they held true to their threat.
