It pleased few people and Northerners called people who supported the compromise as traitors. John Quincy Adams thought that the compromise had not settled the future of slavery in the U.S. This made a large impact on the Civil War and Southerners feared for the worst.

The Confederates opened fire on the fort. 33 hours passed of heavy shelling and injuries, the defenders put down the Stars and Stripes and replaced it with a giant white flag that meant surrender. This attack left the North in a patriotic fury and decided that a Civil War would take place.
