  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    Admitted Missouri as a slave state and created and made Maine to be a free state. Also made the 36 30 line with all states above it being free and all below being slave.
  • Mexican American War

    Mexican American War
    War broke out between Mexico and America due to rising tension from things such as Texas annexation. The US won this war and gave much land to the US.
  • Wilmot proviso

    Wilmot proviso
    Was an amendment that would stop slavery being spread into the territory gained from the Mexico American war. This upset the south even more and also helped with the foundation of the republican party,
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    The compromise did many things such as ban the slave trade in Washington and it also made the fugitive slave act which made almost impossible for slaves to escape.
  • Fugitive Slave Law

    Fugitive Slave Law
    This was a law that made it so that any runaway slave could be taken back by their owner. This was liked very much by the south.
  • Uncle Toms Cabin

    Uncle Toms Cabin
    This was a book written about the life of a slave. It became one of the most sold books for some time. It made many northerners angrier about slavery but many southerners said it was just fiction.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    Kansas Nebraska Act
    This was an act that made the Kansas and Nebraska territory be decided by a popular vote on the decision to be free or slave. This caused many north and southerners to briefly move here.
  • Bleeding kansas

    Bleeding kansas
    When the Kansas Nebraska act was enacted many moved to the territories to try and vote for the territory to be what they wanted. After many moved fighting broke out and the event was called bleeding Kansas.
  • Dred Scott v. Sandford

    Dred Scott v. Sandford
    This was a court case that defined slaves as property which meant that slaves could not be taken from their masters.
  • LeCompton Constitution

    LeCompton Constitution
    Was a constitution proposed by a pro slave southerner for Kansas this constitution had a bill of rights that did not include African Americans and it protected slave holders.
  • Lincoln-Douglas Debates

    Lincoln-Douglas Debates
    These were debates between lincoln and stephen douglas about slavery in the new territory. This established lincoln as a national figure and got him elected in 1860.
  • John Browns Raid on Harpers Ferry

    John Browns Raid on Harpers Ferry
    John brown and his sons raided the harper ferrys armory in an attermpt to start a slave revolt. He ultimately failed and was killed. This raiesed tensions between the north and south.
  • Election of 1860

    The election of 1860 was the election in which Abraham Lincoln was elected. The election of Lincoln was considered to be the reason for the souths secession.
  • Crittenden Compromise

    Crittenden Compromise
    This was a proposed adition to the constitution so that slavery would be enshrined in it and it would then become constitutional and could not be infringed upon.
  • South carolina seccedes

    South carolina seccedes
    After Lincolns election the southern states were enraged so the first state decided to secedes. After this many states follow and eventually the civil war will ensue.
  • Attack on Ft. Sumter

    Attack on Ft. Sumter
    The south cut off the supply lines to fort sumter. Lincoln then sent supplies to the fort to which the south responded by opening fire. This is the start of the civil war.
