Proclamation of 1763
The Proclamation of 1763 was created to keep colonists from moving westward into Ohio Valley territory. Colonists were forbidden to move west which were settled by Indians at the time. Indians thought colonist would push them to the Atlantic seaboard to better regulate them, the king created this proclamation to calm these fears and prevent further fights between Indians and colonists. -
Sugar Act of 1764
A tax passed on foreign refined sugar and increased tax on coffee, indigo, and certain kinds of wine. -
Stamp Act of 1765
Tax required colonists to pay tax on every piece of paper used by the colonists. This money help pay for stationed british troops. Colonist viewed this as an attempt by English to raise money in colonies without approval of colonies legislatures. This resulted in outbursts of violence by the American colonists. -
Boston Massacre
Five colonists were shot and killed by British regulars after participating in a "patriot" mob. Tensions had begun to grow between the two groups after their first appearance in October 1768 to enforce heavy tax. -
Tea Act of 1773
The Tea Act gave a monopoly on tea sales to East India Company. The price of tea was lowed and colonists saw this as another "taxation without representation". Colonists weren't aloud to buy tea from anywhere else and rebelled by refusing to unload the tea. -
The Boston Tea Party
Colonist believed they were being unfairly taxed for war expenses like the French and Indian War. Britian thought imposing taxes on colonists could make them more money, as a result taxes were raised. The participants in The Boston Tea Party, the Sons of Liberty, disguised themselves as Mohawk Indians. Also, 340 chests of tea were dumped into the harbor costing £9,659 worth of damage cause by the Boston Tea Party. -
1st Continental Congress
Meeting of delegates from twelve of the thirteen colonies that met at Carpenters' Hall in Philadelphia. -
Battle of Lexington and Concord
These battles kicked off the start of the American Revolutionary War. British troops marched to Lexington and Concord to seize an arms cache, but were soon retreating under fire. -
Declaration of Independence
A document created by the thirteen colonies that announced there independence from Great Britian.
