Cotton Gin
The Cotton Gin was invented by Eli Whitney. The use of the cotton gin lead to large cotton plantations in the south. Large plantations needed lots of workers. Slaves met those needs. Slavery thus increased during this period. Congress struggled with laws regarding which states entering the Union were slave states and which were free. The south decided to secede after the election of Lincoln, leading to the civil war.

Louisiana Purchase
In 1803, the United States purchased territory from France for roughly $15 million. This became known as the Lousiana purchase. It included all the land drained by the western tributaries of the Mississippi River. The size of the United States more than doubled. The Lousiana purchase caused problems and agruments about borders and slavery which later lead to the Civil war.

American System
President Henry Clay began to promote his idea of uniting the dofferent regions of the country as the American System. He explained that the system would unite the nation's economic interests. The American System then lead to protective teriffs. Most people in the north welcomed the teriffs with relief. On the other hand, the poeple in the south were not so eager. This caused conflicts between the north and south which later on lead to the Civil War.

Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise was a series of agreements created to settle the question of slavery in the United States. Maine was admitted as a free state and Missouri as a slave state. The rest of the Lousiana Territory was split into two "spheres of interest, one for slaveholders and one for free settlers." This caused more conflict between both the north and the south which lead to the Civil War.

Nulllification Crisis
The nullification Crisis was one of the biggest issues in America about state rights. It was caused by an economic downturn that occured in the 1820's. It arose due to the protective tariffs. It also caused conflicts between the North and South.The south believed that nullification would leave no reason to secede. But because of their different opinions it caused more problems in the United States which lead to more disagreements.

Monroe Doctrine
In 1823, President Monroe warned all outside powers not to interfere with affairs in the Western Hemisphere. They should not attempt to create new colonies, he said or try to overthrow newly independent republics in the hemisphere. This was one of the most important foreign policy doctrines. This created conflict between the North and South in America.

Nat Turner's Rebellion
Nat Turner's Rebellion was a slave rebellion that took place in Virginia. Nat Turner led rebel slaves to kill people, The government had had enough. This event led to the compromise in 1850.

Texas Revolution
After Santa Anna revoked local powers in Texas and other Mexicaqn states, several rebellions erupted, including the Texas Revolution. The Texas Revolution was the conflict between the armies of Mexico and Texas. Settlers in Texas didn't want to live under Mexican rule and government any longer. Texas won its independence and became a reoublic, which lead to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo
On Feb. 2nd, 1848, the United States and Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo. Mexico agreed to the Rio Grande border for texas and ceded New Mexico and California to the United States. The U.S. agreed to pay the $15 million. More land was purchased from Mexico and more borders were drawn. This brought up the issue of slavery. This lead to the Nat Turner's Rebellion.

Compromise of 1850
Clay presented to the Senate a series of resolutions, which he hoped would settle all questions between free and slave states. He decided new states would be slave-free and the slave trade was also abolished in Washington D.C. Many notherners refused to abide by these policies. As a result, tensions continued to escalate and eventually a book was wrote about opinions on slavery.

Uncle Tom's Cabin
Harriet Beecher Stowe published Uncle Tom's cabin, which stirred strong reactions from both the North and the South. It delivered the message that slavery was not just a political consent, but also a great moral struggle. Her book had just been published and controversy over slavery drew heated debate which lead to big tensions in Kansas and Nebraska, and later the Kansas-Nebraska Act.

Kansas-Nebraska Act
Douglas introduced a bill in Congress to divide the area into two territories: Nebraska in the North and Kansas in the south. The bill was passed in May. The passage of the bill split the "Whig" Party. They then joined the Democratic party and the Repulican Party. Tensions between North and Sout rose again. This lead to the beating of Charles Sumner and a bitter speech.

Beating of Charles Sumner
Charles Sumner was a Senator of Massahusetts and an avowed Abolitionist and leader of the Republican Party. He gave a speech in the Senate called "The Crime Against Kansas," after the sack of Lawrence. Preston Brooks beat Charles Sumner with a cane. This drew a sharp responce from the American public on the exspansion of slavery in the United States. It eventually led to the American Civil War.

Dred Scott Decision
In 1857, the United States Supreme Court issued a decision in the Dred Scott case, declaring the right of slave owners to take their slaves into the Western territories, therefor "negating" the doctrine of popular sovereignty and severely undermining Republican Party. This lead to an uprising in Harpers Ferry, Virginia.

Harper's Ferry
On Oct. 16, Brown led a band of 21 men, black and white, into Harpers Ferry, Virginia. He aimed to seize the federal arsenal there, distribute the captured arms to slaves in the area, and start a general slave uprising. This event led to John Brown's hanging, and the election of 1860.

Election of 1860
Lincoln, and 3 other major candidates "vied" for office. The Democratic Party split up due to the issue of slavery. Former "Know-Nothings" and Whigs from the south, along with some moderate Northerners, organized the Constitutional Union Party, which ignored the issue of slavery altogether. Lincoln emerged as the winner. Lincoln's victory convinced southerners that they had lost their political vote in the national government. This then lead to the southern secesion.

South Carolina Secedes
Fearful that the northern republicans would submit the South to what noted Virginia agriculturist Edmund Ruffin called "the most complete subjection and political bondage," some Southern states began to act. South Carolina seded from the Union, leading the way for many other states. This was the last straw. The South Carolina's seceding from the Union led to the beginning of the Civil war.
