This was the first time that the ACT was used to gauge student learning. -
Civil Rights Act
MOST IMPORTANT. This legislation stated that there will be no discrimination of any kind in schools. This includes race, gender, class, religion, etc. This was meaningful beyond the scope of education. -
Elementary and Secondary Education Act
MOST IMPORTANT. It was passed by the Johnson administration. It dictated the funding the Federal government. Some consider this the most far-reaching legislation concerning education in American history. -
Title IX
MOST IMPORTANT. This was the legislation passed that stated that there was to be no discrimination of students on the basis of gender. We still feel the ramifications of this today in our athletics. There can't be more male sports teams than female teams. -
Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act
Stated that students with disabilities will be placed in their least restrictive environment -
A Nation at Risk Report
MOST IMPORTANT. This was a report formed by the Reagan administration that stated that the high schools of America were failing. It said that the students weren't taking enough core classes. It extended the length of school days as well as school years. -
Improving America's School Act
Legislation put into place by the Clinton administration. It reauthorized the use of ESEA. -
No Child Left Behind
A system put in place by the Bush administration that labeled schools as failing if not at 100% success rate. -
Every Student Succeeds Act
Program put in place by the Obama administration that side-stepped some of the NCLB regulations that allowed for Federal control of the allocation of funds. -
Wisconsin Act
This allows districts to create separate schools and classes for girls and boys.
