    Events effecting travel and tourism

  • The 747 jumbo jet aircraft

    The 747 jumbo jet aircraft
The 747 jumbo jet positively effected travel and tourism in many ways. Firstly this jet was huge in size, creating more than double the seats than a normal jet. This meant that a lot more people are able to board one flight in the 747, also meaning that the airline were able to spread out the cost of flying the jet, resulting in them being able to sell each seat for a much cheaper cost than other airlines. This meant that travel became available to those with not as disposable income.

Another way the jumbo jet positively impacted tourism was it's ability to fly longer ranges. This connected the UK to a much wider range of countries and enabled tourists to travel to new, further destinations. Despite this jet having a hugely positive and lasting impact on the travel industry, it also had it's negatives. One being the impact on the environment. Normal planes emit a large amount of air pollution alone, but due to the 747's size, the amount of pollution produced is...

...significantly increased. Overtime the concern on the amount of pollution produced by this aircraft increased due to the growth of knowledge on climate change. Another negative impact of the jumbo jet was the amount of noise pollution produced. Due to it's size, the amount of noise it created, especially during take off and landing, lead to many complaints from people living near by to airports.

Overall I believe that the 747 jumbo jet changed the way we viewed travel as it become more accessible to people, and helped people travel further than possible before. It made traveling much more achievable and helped develop more technology to carry on accessible travel. It is unfortunate that this jet had negative impacts on our climate, but we were able to learn from this to create more environmentally friendly travel options.
  • The launch of Ryanair

    The launch of Ryanair
The launch of Ryanair has had many lasting, positive impacts on the travel and tourism industry, the biggest one being it's low costs. Due to it's 'budget prices' it meant that travel became more accessible to those with less disposable income so more and more people started travelling. This led to a growth in tourism as a whole across the world including hotels, activity places, shops etc. Another positive impact of Ryanair is the increase in competition with other airlines.
  • The launch of Ryanair

    The launch of Ryanair
Due to Ryanair's costs being so low, they very quickly became increasingly popular, forcing other airlines to re evaluate their costs to attempt to match Ryanair's. This led to an even higher increase in tourism as so many airlines were now dropping their prices. Another positive impact was that Ryanair was one of the first airlines to introduce online booking and ticketless travel. This further increased the amount of people travelling as it made booking flights more accessible from anywhere.

    The launch of Ryanair
While Ryanair has had it's positive impacts, it also has various negative impacts on the travel industry. One being it's bad reputation of poor customer service. Unfortuntley Rynair has grown this reputation over time of not treating customers how they should and their customer service just not being up to standard. In more recent years there have been many stories shared on social media of this reputation leading to less people using Ryanair and therefore travelling in general.

Another negative impact Ryanair has had is it's hidden fee's. People often choose to travel with Ryanair is it is a budget friendly airline. However it has come more apparent that Ryanair have many hidden fee's that they will try to charge you. For example hefty fee's if you cancel your flight, a fee to print your boarding pass, fee's for baggage or priority boarding and for seat selection. All this may mean your ticket isn't as cheap as initially advertised. This led to less people travelling.
  • The opening of the channel tunnel

The opening of the channel tunnel
The opening of the channel tunnel has had huge impacts on the tourism industry, partially in England and France where the tunnel runs to and from. It has increased visitor numbers to both these countries which has then increased the amount of money coming in by tourism. The channel tunnel has also had such a positive impact as it is an additional way to travel from one country to another that isn't via plane or ferry which for some people are not good options to tarvel either because of fear...

... or inconvenience, for example the hassle of security at airports. Another positive impact of the channel tunnel is it's environmental impact. Compared to other transport like planes, the channel tunnel is a lot more environmentally friendly as it has a much lower carbon footprint. This is very appealing to eco- conscious travellers and so we have seen an increase in people using the channel tunnel as people become more educated about the current climate crisis.
  • The opening of the channel tunnel

The opening of the channel tunnel
Some of the negative impacts of the channel tunnel are the issues of security and managing who/ what is travelling via the tunnel. Because of this struggle there is a risk of terrorism, smuggling and illegal immigration between England and France. This might increase England's current threat level if any terrorist activity is to happen in France as they have much easier access to England now than they had before the tunnel was introduced. If our threat level is to go up it will put of tourists..

... from visiting England. Another negative impact of the tunnel on the travel industry is the maintaining and operating costs. Despite the channel tunnel helping to bring more money into the travel industry, it has large operating costs and large costs to keep it safe and able to run. If the tunnel continues to need work being done on it to keep it maintained, they may have to consider increasing the prices of tickets which may put tourists of from using the tunnel to travel.

9/11 at the world trade centre
... after the attack. As there was an increase in security, new technology like face recognition, advanced baggage screening systems and online check in process was introduced to further increase safety when travelling. This assisted with the long queues at the airports which came from the increase in security after the attack so tourists were no longer put of by airport waiting times.

9/11 at the world trade centre
Despite 9/11 being such a heartbreaking part of history, it has had many positive impacts on the travel industry. One being the increase in security at airports. This made travelling by air so much safer and ensured safety for those countries most at risk to terrorism. Although the increase in security was great for safety reasons, it had a negative impact on the customers wanting to travel as it meant it now takes longer to travel through airport security and customers may need to allow more...

... time for this. Another positive impact was the improvement in crisis preparedness. Now all emergency services and the travel industry have been able to learn from this attack and how they need to improve to prevent attacks like this, and if they do happen what best to do. This has also increased safety for travelers and they can feel at ease when travelling to other countries, ultimately meaning more people will now travel as it is much safer to do so.
  • 9/11 at the world trade centre

9/11 at the world trade centre
An immediate negative impact of 9/11 was that people stopped travelling for a period of time due to fear of more terrorists attacks. This effected all businesses within the travel industry and all countries, not just America. There was a sharp decline in the amount of visitors travelling to the Uk after 9/11. However with the increase in security measures, the travel industry eventually recovered from this decline. One more of the positive impacts was the new technology that was developed...
  • The Covid-19 pandemic

    The Covid-19 pandemic
I think Covid-19 is one of the events that has had the biggest impact on the travel and tourism industry, both negative and positive. A negative impact being that visitors to the UK and various other countries almost completely stopped. This effected all businesses in the tourism industry as not only did we have no over seas visitors entering the UK, but also UK citizens not being able to leave their homes led to tourism businesses not being used at all. This caused many of them to shut down.
  • The Covid-19 pandemic

    The Covid-19 pandemic
So not only did this have an immediate effect on tourism, but also lasting effect as it would have been difficult for businesses to re-open post pandemic so a lot of them were permanently shut. This meant there was a decrease in the amount of places available for tourists to visit once travel was permitted again. It took the travel industry many years to recover from this and is only now starting to get back the amount of money trough tourism that they were getting pre-pandemic.
  • The Covid-19 pandemic

    The Covid-19 pandemic
Another negative impact of covid is the requirements to travel now post pandemic. Many countries now require you to have Covid-19 vaccination in order to enter the country. This makes it very difficult to travel if you do not have this vaccination, which has a lasting decrease in the amount of tourists travelling to countries that require this vaccination. However it also gave the travel industry hope in regaining their business back as vaccinations helped ease restrictions on travelling.
  • The Covid-19 pandemic

    The Covid-19 pandemic
Although Covid-19 has had mostly negative impacts on the travel industry, there has been some positive impacts. For example the digital transformation. With everything going online in the pandemic, the travel industry had to adapt to this to, and was something that stuck around post-pandemic. Now travel agenises, tour operators, hotel company's and more mostly operate online, making booking travel much easier and more accessible than before, leading to increase in travellers post-pandemic.
