  • Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise was a United States federal statute by Henry Clay. It regulated slavery in the country's western territories by prohibiting the practice in the former Louisiana Territory north of the parallel 36°30′ north,except within the boundaries of the proposed state of Missouri.Maine was admitted as a free state and Missouri was a slave state. But, this event increased tensions between the North and South when Missouri requested admission to the Union as a slave state in 1819.

    A tariff passed by the Congress of the United States on May 19, 1828, designed to protect industry in the northern United States. This was labeled the Tariff of Abominations by its southern detractors because of the effects it had on the antebellum Southern economy.
  • Nat Turner Rebellion

    A slave Rebellion lead by Nat Turner that occurred in Virginia, in August 1831. Slaves that were found being a part of the rebellion in that state were executed, and many slaves that were not a part of the rebellion were simply executed as well. This event created tensions between the north and south because of generally how many white people died because of the rebellion.

    Five separate bills passed by the United States congress in September 1850. This began a 4 year political confrontation between free and slave states, and what states were able to acquire slaves or not. Many people had their disagreements on the new bills. This increased tensions between the north and south because this event basically lead into more problems and conflicts on which states were to be what.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Laws passed by congress in 1850, which provided for the return of slaves who escaped from one state into another state or territory. This created more tensions between the north and south because the north felt as if this act gave commissioners too much power than they should have.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    A novel which made aiding or assisting runaway slaves a crime in free states. This book was an anti- slavery argument. The book was published in 1852.
  • Kansas- Nebraska Act

    Act that was passed in 1854, that allowed people in both Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery within their borders. The north did not like this act, because it allowed the south to open up to being a free state when they should be a slave state.

    Preston Brooks attacked Charles Sumner with a walking cane, because of a speech given that criticized slaveholders, including a relative of Brooks. Brooks was a representative, and Charles was a senate. This increased tensions between the north and south because each of these men were on opposites sides for whether of not slavery should be abolished of not. So, when Charles gave his opinion on slaves, brooks disagreed.

    The debates in Freeport, both Lincoln and Douglas began arguments, as the issue of slavery was of monumental importance to citizens across the nation. Newspaper coverages of the debates were intense. This also increased tensions between the north and south because it allowed for each state to determine where the stand on the slavery issue.

    Raid on Harpers Ferry
    An effort by abolitionist John Brown to initiate an armed slave revolt in 1859 by taking over a United States arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. This event ultimately led to the civil war. This event also created tensions between the north and south because John Brown was openly opposed to slavery and believed it was his mission in life to ban slavery altogether.

    This election selected Lincoln as the president of the united states. Also, Lincoln and Hamlin emerged triumphant, and the election of Lincoln served as the primary catalyst of the American civil war. This created tensions between the north and south due to Lincoln's opinion on slavery. South Carolina also seceded from the Union.
  • "Bleeding Kansas"

    Violent confrontations that occurred from 1854 to 1861. It began from being a political and ideological debate over the legality of slavery in the proposed state of Kansas. This created tensions between the north and south because thus argument was a result from the north responding to the fact that the south did not want to be a slave state.
