Satellite States
independent nation under the control of a more powerful nation. Eastern Europe nations were controlled by the USSR. Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romaina, & Bulgaria were forced into communist governments along with East Germany. 1945-1960. -
Truman Doctrine
Trumans promise to help nations struggling against communist movements ; US would support free peoples who were trying to resist outside force with economic aid. By 1949 he was concerned that the USSR were trying to spread communismwithin Europe & Asia. -
Marshall Plan
foreign policy that offered economic aid to Western European countries after WWll ; helped Europe that was suffering lack of food, fuel, and other supplies. US gave $13 billion in loans & helped provide markets for US goods. -
Containment
Policy of keeping communism contained within its existing borders. in 1947 ; idea from george f. kennan. -
Berlin airlifts
demostrated to west berlin, the sovient union, and the world how far the US would go to protect noncommunist parts of Europe and contain communism. ; 1948 -
Warsaw Pact
military alliance of the sovient union and its satellite states. created in 1955. all of the communist states of eastern europe except yugoslavia were members. -
NATO
The North Atlantic Treaty, formed in 1949, provided the military alliance to counter sovient expansion. 12 western european and north american nations agreed to act together in the defense of western europe.
