Peter Lalor was put in charge in December 1845. Peters words were " It is my duty now to swear you in, and to take you with the oath to be faithful to the Southern Cross" -
the mining lisence
The government decided to make a mining license to help stock up the finance for the colony. The license would cost 30 shillings a month which now is $150 today. Miners would complain that the price was to high but they wouldn't change it. The police would often do checks to see if the miners had it. If they didn't have a license or didn't show it to the police they would chain them to a tree until they could be taken to prison. There were lots of fights from this. -
the murder of James Scobie
James Scobie was killed on the 7th of October 1854. The investigator suspected the the owner of the Eureka hotel James Bentley. Bentley was arrested but released a short time later. -
Battle for victory
on the 3rd of December 1854 the governments troops raided the diggers flimsy stockade at the Eureka Lead (Ballarat) The battle only lasted 20 minutes. More than 30 men were killed. -

the Eureka Stockade started on the 3rd or December 1854 and it only went for no longer then 20 minutes -
Population of the goldfields
The population in the goldfields hit a peak in 1858 there were 150,000 people in the goldfields. Over half of the people were British immigrants and 40,000 were Chinese.there were also Americans, French, Italian, German, Polish immigrants
