Ernst Mach, February 18, 1838-February 19, 1916

  • the Analysis of Sensations

The Analysis of Sensations was a book published in 1886 by Philosopher Ernst Mach. The book focuses on the study of human perception of the world around them. It guides the reader through the understanding of how our senses receive and utilize the world around us. By studying the way we perceive our surroundings and process them it has led to developments in the study of various fields.
  • The Analysis of Sensations

The Analysis of Sensations has contributed greatly to the philosophy of science in more than one way. In the was of empiricism and and epistemology. Mach's book goes well with the theory of empiricism because it asserts that knowledge is based off sensory experience and learning comes from experience and observations. Epistemology refers to the understanding of how information is processed based off of knowledge and the discussion of beliefs and opinions.
  • Mach speed in 1887

In 1887 Mach published the first photo in history of a bullet traveling faster than the speed of sound, creating a shock wave. Mach discovered the shock wave to be formed in a cone or concave shape pointing in the same direction as the bullet. With this revolutionary breakthrough mach contributed to the future understanding of supersonic aerodynamics and thus brought about the measurement of Mach speed. This new discovery triggered thought provoking future research and scientific influence.
  • The Science of Mechanics: A Critical and Historical Account of its Development

Ernst studied the the science of mechanics and brought about a philosophy called "Mach's principle". Mach's principle was the idea that inertial forces were influenced by matter in the large scale universe. He proposed that matter is not influenced by laws of physics on earth but rather tied to masses across the universe. This hypothesis influenced Albert Einstein's theory of relativity and gave him a basis to conduct his research on, rather than traditional concepts of physics.
