The Mach Bands was Ernst Mach's invention to study how eye and brain process visual information. This was a step in field of psychology and the study of the human mind.
This was not only used by scientists, but also by later by artists for visual effect a it satisfying the endless fascination humans have with novelty and creativity.
This invention is based off lateral inhibitions which is how the retina collects and processed light, how it affects light collection of neighboring cells. -

Mach also advanced the concept that all knowledge is derived from sensation. The phenomena under scientific investigation can be understood only by experiences or sensations, presented in the observation of the phenomena.
This position leads to there being no accepted statement in natural science unless it is empirically correct. Mach's extremely thorough criteria of verifiability lad him to reject such metaphysical concepts such as absolute time and space.
