  • Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust

    Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust
    Joe was well cared for. The first developmental challenge happens during infancy: trust versus mistrust. A child can either develop/learn trust or mistrust based on how they are loved and cared for during infancy. A child who has been well cared for and takes away trust will look at life as meaningful and safe. A child who is mistreated will take away mistrust will be fearful and often mistrust others; this child will also be more likely to struggle (or be unsuccessful) with other crises aswell.
  • Stage 6: Intimacy vs. Isolation

    Stage 6: Intimacy vs. Isolation
    Joe got married. The sixth stage takes place during early adulthood. This crisis is known as intimacy versus isolation. During this developmental challenge, young adults being to have committed intimate relationships. in this stage, young adults must make themselves vulnerable and open. Identity shifts from being a single individual to an individual in a relationship. If successful in entering and maintaining an intimate relationship, they gain intimacy. successful individuals are left isolated.
  • Stage 8: Ego Integrity vs. Despair

    Stage 8: Ego Integrity vs. Despair
    Joe looked back on his life and was satisfied. The eighth stage, ego integrity versus despair, takes place in late adulthood. This developmental challenge involves reviewing and reflecting on one's life experiences. The crisis is accepting or rejecting those experiences. Life is full of good, bad, regret, joy, sadness, etc. However, individuals in this stage must conclude whether their life was well spent (resulting in ego integrity) or if their life was unsatisfactory (resulting in despair).
