Erikson's Stages of Development Timeline by Morgan Kuiper

  • Infancy: Trust vs Mistrust

    Infancy: Trust vs Mistrust
On 12/12/1943, Henry is one month old and transitions from being cared for by his biological parents to being cared for by two foster parents. This event occurred because Henry's biological parents were abusive and neglectful. This event involves the crisis of trust vs mistrust. Between birth and one year, infants who receive dependable, consistent care become trusting of those around them. Conversely, infants with caregivers who are unreliable or neglectful develop fear and mistrust of others.
  • Middle Childhood: Industry vs. Inferiority

    Middle Childhood: Industry vs. Inferiority
Henry is now 10 years old and is learning to play hockey. His foster parents attend one of his hockey practice sessions and cheer him on from the stands while he practices. This event involves industry vs inferiority. Between 6 and 12 years of age, children who are encouraged and applauded while acquiring new skills learn industriousness. If children receive disapproval or discouragement while learning new skills, they feel inferior and less capable compared to their friends and peers.
  • Late Adulthood: Ego Integrity vs. Despair

Late Adulthood: Ego Integrity vs. Despair
Henry celebrates his eightieth birthday with his adult children and their grandchildren. As he reflects on his life, he feels proud of his career as a physician, his research publications, and his mentorship of many medical students. This event involves the conflict of integrity vs despair. Integrity and satisfaction are experienced when one reflects positively on their past choices, accomplishments, and key memories. Despair is felt when one has regrets about or discontent with their life.
