Erikson's Psychosocial Stages

  • Trust vs. Mistrust

    Trust vs. Mistrust
As a baby, Angelina was cared for properly. Her parents did not neglect her needs and she learned to trust them. In Erikson's first stage of trust versus mistrust, the crisis is between infants being totally dependent and requiring needs to be met (trust) and when these needs aren't met they may survive but will be psychologically affected (mistrust).
  • Guilt vs. Initiative

During this stage, Angelina's mistakes were harshly talked about by her parents. This left angela feeling guilt-ridden. In Erikson's eighth stage of ego integrity versus despair, the crisis is developing a personal self of independence (initiative) and failures at this stage can lead a child to shame and doubt (guilt).
  • Intimacy vs. Isolation

As a young adult, Angelina meets a nice partner who she marries. She finds success in an intimate relationship. In Erikson's fifth stage, intimacy vs. isolation, the crisis is between finding a successful and long intimate partner (intimacy) or being unsuccessful in relationships and being alone and isolated.
