Charlottetown Conference
1.New Brunswick,Nova Scotia, and P.E.I were thinking of combining under a central government.
2.The United Provinces wanted to take advantage of this meeting by trying to convince the atlantic colonies to join them and create a larger colony.
3.United Province of Canada promised that the new government would build a railway connecting all of the colonies together. -
Quebec Conference
1.The Quebec conference lasted for over 2 weeks and they created a list called the 72 resolution for the new country.
2.The colonies that came were, Provinces of Canada,New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, P.E.I. Newfoundland sent 2 observers.
3.3 of the 72 resolutions were about the London Conference -
London Conference
1.The delegates used the resolutions to create a bill,everyone would agree with
2.The bill recieved the Royal Assent on March 29 1867
3.The delegates wanted the new country to be named after kingdom but the British feared the U.S would be mad so they decided to call it a dominion. -
The British North American Act
1.Created the Dominion of Canada.
2. The federal government gave them the power to control the country.
3.the provincial government has the power to control the given area. -
The Red River Settlement
1.The Red River Settlement wasnt technically a separate colony, it was "governed by the governor and the council of the Hudson's Bay Company
2.Lord Selkirk spent a lot of his money to let people live in a better farming life by moving to this settlement. -
The Manitoba Act
1.Canadian governmnet agreed that the Red River Settlement should become a government.
2.The Metis Bill of Rights was part of the Manitoba Act, French and English became their official languages, now there are 2 publicly funded school systems (Roman Catholic and Protestant).
3.The government did not dismiss what the Metis did during thr Red River Resistance. -
Treaty of Washington
1.This allowed Americans sell Canadian fish without being charged.
2.Allow American ships into the St. Lawrence River.
3.Both help pay 15.5million dollars damages during the Civil War. -
The British Columbia Act
1.Railway connected to British Columbia to Canada
2.Give the province $35 000 until their population reaches 400 000
3.British Columbia to have control of their own government's land. -
Dominion Lands Act
1.Gave settlers about 65 hectares (quarter) of land.
2.Settlers had to live on that land and work on it for 3 years
3.This act was intended to persuade others to settle on the prairire grasslands of the North-West Territories. -
Prince Edward Island Act
1.Canada helped P.E.I with their economic crisis, Canada gave them a loan.
2.Canada offered to pay for their railway debt.
3.Canada also offered to help buy some land for them.
