  • Introduce Research Unit

    Introduce Research Unit
    Students will watch a PowToon presentations about the unit and complete a Socratic seminar in class then review a PowerPoint on the research paper process for homework, submitting any questions for clarification online. Students will also be given a research packet as well. This is a one-day lesson introducing the unit, which will last through October 4.
  • Using Technology and Conducting Research Safely

    Using Technology and Conducting Research Safely
    Teacher will introduce the safety guidelines and philosophy for use of technology, introduce the RADCAB model for evaluating sources, then model finding and evaluating sources, including bogus sources from Kathy Schrock's website and valid sources from the Sacramento Library databases, as well as other online sources. Students share ideas whole class today, and will apply these skills independently in later lessons.
  • MLA Requirements

    MLA Requirements
    Students will take an online quiz as a pre-assessment on the 13th, which will shape later instruction. The teacher will review MLA citation and introduce changes for the 8th edition on September 14. On September 26 she will review MLA manuscript formatting requirements. Students will be implementing these skills for all research and writing.
  • Note-taking Skills

    Note-taking Skills
    The teacher will model how to use NoodleTools to take research notes, and present information on when and how to paraphrase, summarize, and quote as well as how to properly cite information. Students will then practice paraphrasing in groups using TitanPad. This will take place over a two day period, with teacher modeling on the 14th and 15th and student practice on the 15th.
  • Collaborative List of Sources

    Collaborative List of Sources
    Students practice finding and evaluating sources, then recommend them to classmates on Schoology, creating a shared list of useful sources that can be used for the research papers.
  • Research and Note-taking

    Research and Note-taking
    After choosing a research topic and getting approval (signature) from the teacher, students will complete a KWL chart about their topic, write research questions, and then conduct research/ take notes online using NoodleTools to record their notes, which will be graded as a formative assessment using a rubric. Students will be conducting research from September 16-20.
  • Organizing Research into Outlines

    Organizing Research into Outlines
    Students will first create bubble maps using an online graphic organizer, then create outlines using NoodleTools. The teacher will model for students how to highlight and sort information then create a logical outline. Outlines will be graded as formative assessments using a rubric. Students will work on outlines from September 21-23 and must have them completed by the 26th.
  • Write Rough Drafts

    Write Rough Drafts
    After the teacher introduces various ways to integrate quotes and students practice collaboratively using TitanPad, students will review MLA format then begin writing their rough drafts, exporting the outlines from NoodleTools onto GoogleDocs. Students will work on these September 26-27. Rough drafts will be a formative assessment, graded using a rubric.
  • Editing and Revising

    Editing and Revising
    Students will collaborate using GoogleDocs to edit and revise their peers papers, based on guiding questions. The teacher will review common errors based on formative assessments and past student papers. Students will then continue to edit and revise their essays until the final due date. This will take from September 28-October 3.
  • Submit Final Drafts

    Students will submit their final drafts.
