AIDS drug FDA Approval
The FDA approved the first antiretroviral drug called zidovudine (AZT) for the treatment of AIDs. Congress approved emergency funding to states to help lay the groundwork for the AIDS Drug Assistance Program. This medication is a Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitor (NRTIs) which block an HIV enzyme called reverse transcriptase. -
Wikipedia
Wikipedia was launched in 2001 and was the first user generated encyclopedia. While others were launched before Wikipedia, none of them were considered successful. By August of that year, the site reached over 8,000 articles and by the end of the year 20,000 articles and 18 language editions. -

Human Genome Project
The human genome project was completed two years ahead of schedule. This project identified the 20,000-25,000 genes in human DNA. The project was formally launched in 1990 with funding coming from the US government through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other groups from around the world. -
YouTube Founded
YouTube was created by 3 former PayPal Employees. The site allowed users to upload and share videos. The first video uploaded was Me at the Zoo which showed the creators at the San Diego zoo. The first video on the site to reach over one million views was a Nike advertisement featuring Ronaldinho in September 2005. -

iPhone Released
The first Apple iPhone was released selling over 1 million smart phones in 74 days. This allowed users to access the Internet from their phone, expanding from the call only phones of the past. Development on this project had begun in 2004 as the highly confidential "Project Purple". -
Graduated Virginia Tech
Ms. Tolley graduated from Virginia Tech with her B.S. in Engineering Science and Mechanics in May of 2010. -
AI on Jeopardy
IBM's Watson supercomputer was featured on an episode of Jeopardy! In a world first for artificial intelligence, the super computer defeated two human competitors on the show. The super computer could not recognize other contestants answers, but was able to exhibit complex wagering strategies for Double Jeopardy. -
Graduated with Masters
Ms. Tolley graduated with her M.S in Engineering Mechanics in 2013. -
Job at Deep Run
Ms. Tolley started working at Deep Run High School teaching Technology Education courses. -
Google Glass
Google Glass was made available to the public in 2014, kicking off a spree of wearable technology. It is a hands-free device that allows users to communicate with the internet through voice command. The device features a touch pad, camera, and liquid crystal on silicon display. -
Landing on a Comet
In 2014, Rosetta's Philae Probe successfully landed on a comet. This was the first time an object has been landed on a comet and it has allowed to collection of data on some of the oldest material in the known universe. Although the thrusters and harpoons failed during landing, it was able to bounce to a complete landing. -
