energy over history

  • Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz

    Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz
    BIO: (July 1, 1646 – November 14, 1716)
  • Joseph Black discovers caloric fluid

    Joseph Black discovers caloric fluid
JB observed that when cold object is places in hot water then removed the object becomes much warmer.
this was called caloric fluid witch flows naturaly from hot to cold things. BIO: Born in Bordeaux France on April 16th, 1728 and passed away on December 6th, 1799 was a French-Scottish physician and chemist, known for his discoveries of latent heat, specific heat, and carbon dioxide
  • Joseph Black developed the analytical balance

The analytical balance based on a light-weight beam balanced on a wedge-shaped fulcrum. Each arm carried a pan on which the sample or standard weights was placed. It far exceeded the accuracy of any other balance of the time and became an important scientific instrument in most chemistry laboratories
  • Joseph Black studied the propties of carbon dioxide

He studied this throughout the 1750's. He called the gas 'fixed air" as it was denser than air and supported neither flame nor animal life
  • Joseph Black discovered Latent Heat

Referred to the heat transferred that caused a change of volume while the thermodynamic system was held at constant temperature
  • Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford - heat could be manufactured

Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford - heat could be manufactured
Heat could be manufactured by the motion of workers. He was the first to realize that heat and mechanical energy were related. BIO: March 26, 1753 – August 21, 1814
became the minister of war in Bavaria
