The Ghana Empire
(Ancient) Ghana was located 500 miles north of the present Ghana between the Senegal and Niger Rivers. The actual name for it was Wagadugu and was controlled by Sunadita in 1240. The people of Ghana traded gold and salt. It was taken over by the Almoravids in 1078. -

Hausa Empire
This empire was located in what is currently now north west Nigeria. The origin of Hausa and where the people came from is still arguable, but historians know that by 1000 AD, cults and markets began to evolve. Islam came into the empire in the late 1300’s by the Fulians. They were very close allies and peaceful with Kanem-Bornu to the east. -

The Great Zimbabwe Empire was in Zimbabwe in Africa. The Great Zimbabwes carved eight birds into a soapstone. They viewed the eight birds as loyalty. -

The Mali dynasty was located in western Africa. Some of terracotta sculptures was a very good trading good to the Malis. There were 40-50 million people in the Mali Empire. The mali had two seasons rainy season and a sunny season. -

Songhai Empire
The Songhai Empire was located in West Africa, including parts of present day countries such as Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Guinea and Mauritania. There was much fertile land to farm, attracting more people into their empire. It had been transformed from the small empire of the Gao into the Songhai Empire by 1464. -

Benin Empire
The Benin Empire stretched across the Nigeria Country. They had a Trio of Kingdoms Owo, ljebu, and Benin in Nigeria. Benin's royal histories relate that the court's brass casters learned their art from an Ife master named Iguegha, who had been sent from Ife around 1400 at the request of Benin's oba Oguola. -

Mutapa Empire
The Mutapa Empire is located stretched between the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers of Southern Africa in the modern states of Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The empire was largely built on trade exporting copper and ivory. After gaining control of the Monomotapa in the early years of the century they were later driven out after a defeat in 1693. -

Yoruba Empire
Also known as the Oyo empire, these people inhabited southwest Nigeria. The people of this empire worshipped many gods and had extensive trade. they were taken over by the British in the 19th century. This empire was in collaboration with the Ijebu and Benin empires. -
The Kilwa Empire
The Kilwa Empire was located in the shores of the Persian gulf in the present day country of Tanzania. It was built by the Iranian Bazrangids and fell after the city was under siege. After Shapur I succeeded Adashir I conquered the Bazrangi state, he conquered the southern shores of the Persian Gulf and the Muscat Region.
