Electricity

  • 600 BCE

    Static Electricity

Greeks founded static electricity by rubbing amber and silk together, where they noticed there was some electricity involved.
  • Electricity Term Invented

Scientist William Gilbert invents the term electricity. He was the first to realize that the world had a magnetic field, and that magnetism and electricity were related.
  • Franklin - Lightning is Electricity

Benjamin Franklin first discovers that lightning is a form of electricity by putting a key on the end of a kite and flying it during a lightning storm
  • Thermo-electricity

Thomas Johann discovers that when the junction of certain metals gets heated, electricity flows in the form of thermo-electricity
  • Ampere - electricity and magnetism

Andre Ampere published his theories about electricity and magnetism. The unit for electric current was named after him (Ampere).
  • Telegraph Invented

Charles Wheatstone and other scientists create the first telegraph.
  • Morse Code

Samuel Morse demonstrated that through a telegraph machine, he can send dots and dashes, which would later be known as morse code
  • Period: to

    DC Electric Generator

Thomas Edison builds the first direct current electric generator, where he later provides electricity for large cities
  • Telephone invented

Alexander Graham Bell invents the telephone, which used electricity to transmit voice for the first time.
  • First Electric Light

Joseph Swan from Britain first invents an electric light with a carbon filament lamp. Thomas Edison discovers this in America soon after.
  • Period: to

    AC Motor / Tesla Coil

Nikola Tesla develops the alternating current motor. AC Current becomes the established power supply in the US. Tesla also develops the tesla coil to produce extremely high frequency currents. First neon and fluorescent lights
  • First Turbine

Charles Parsons builds his first electric powered turbine which later is used for propelling large boats.
  • Hertz

Heinrich Hertz detected electric waves in the atmosphere.
  • X-Ray

Wilhelm Roentgen from Germany discovered that rays made a screen glow which was later used as X-Rays to look inside ones body.
  • Light Energy

Albert Einstein discovered that light energy can be used to produce electricity... photo-voltaic cells
  • National Grid

Electricity Supply act allowed for the first national grid to be used
  • Nuclear Power

Worlds first large scale nuclear power plant opens
