Edward Lee Thorndike began the study of behaviors. Thorndike studied the behavior of animals and connected his results to humans. The purpose of his research was to improve human learning. Thorndike's findings led to increased practice and repitition in math.

Jean Piaget studies cognitive development of children
Piaget Video

Bloom's Taxonomy
As the work of educational psychologists spread in the first half of the twentieth century, Benjamin Bloom focused on the theory of mastery learning. Bloom developed what we call Bloom's Taxonomy that centered on three domains of learning. Bloom's Taxonomy is as significant to the education process now as it was in the mid-1900s.

Sputnik and American Education
Before the Russians launched Sputnik 1, the United States education system was focused on life skills. After the launch, the National Defense Education Act was passed. The NDEA introduced more federal government control into the education system by requiring increased focus on math, science, and modern foreign languages.

Jerome Bruner - Process of Education
In his book, Process of Education, Bruner focused on four themes: structure in learning, readiness for learning, analytical thinking, and motives for learning. Bruner influenced education with his belief that students are active in the problem-solving process.

Back-to-the-Basics Movement of the late 70s and early 80s
This movement began in response to declining test scores that were a result of education that focused on life skills instead of core subject content. The Reagan administration pushed the movement to the forefront after "A Nation at Risk" report came out criticizing America's education system. The movement had a positive effect by closing the gap in minority performance.
