W.E.B Du Bois helped push the NAACP and political agenda for Black individuals and education. He challenged segregation and "white rule" and wanted equality for African Americans. -

The United States was involved in World War II during this time. Schools faced personnel problems and education was put on hold due to drafting, enlisting and individuals going to work in factories and other fields that needed aid. -
Brown v Board of Education
US Supreme Court rules schools segregated by race are unequal and therefore unconstitutional. -
Sputnik
Soviet Union launched a satellite that orbited the Earth's elliptical path sparking concern about the US and lack of education in science and technology. The launch of Sputnik lit a fire in the US educational system. -
Following Sputnik
Following the launch of Sputnik, science education became more of a priority for the USA and influenced the National Defense Education Act which authorized the increased funding for scientific research as well science, math and foreign language education.
