GCE O/A-Levels Introduced
The introduction of the GCE qualifications were met with some concern regarding the difficulty and criticism regarding the rigid minimum age limit. Not everyone was able to take them and it was proposed the difficulty of the qualifications would put people off taking them. -
Re-organisation Of The Minstry Of Education
Ministry of eduaction was re-named 'Department Of Education & Science'. There is also a re-jig of the structure of staff. -
Education Act
Allowed children to transfer between schools at ages other than 11 and granted an experimental status to the middle school. School leaving age raised to 16. -
CSE Qualifications Introduced
The Certificate of Secondary Education introduced, to provide an alternative qualification to the more challenging GCE qualifications. -
Issue Of The Circular
A circular was issued by the DES recommending the LEAs to switch to the comprehensive schooling system. All most all of England and Wales switched and this marked the end of the tripartite system and the 11-plus. -
Plowden Report
A three year investigation into Primary Education in all its aspects and how the transition to Secondary Education planned out.The report Helped to establish the three tier school system (First, Middle and Secondary. Pupils moved between schools aged 8-12, there was also the abolishment of punishment in Primary Schools. Schools also introduced a programme for contact with children's homes. -
1970 Circular
An attempt by Margaret Thatcher to reverse the events of the Circular in 1965, in which LEAs are given the power to decide the status of Secondary Education in their areas separate from central government. -
Education Act (Handicapped Children)
This act removed the view that handicap children were 'unfit for Education'. -
School leaving age raised
The School leaving age was raised to 16 from 15, this meant that all the pupils who had left school at 15, were required by law to complete a further year of education. -
Formation Of the Assessment Performace Unit
The APU was formed to 'promote the development methods of assessing and monitoring the achievement of children at school. It was also to seek and identify why pupils were under-achieving. -
Education Act 76'
The act contained a clause which effectively abolished selection in schools - however the rest of the act contained so many loopholes and workarounds that the effect on selection was essentially negligible. However, the act did establish provision for special education needs; LEAs were required to provide special education for all handicapped pupils in the county and voluntary schools. -
1976 Act Reversed
The 1976 Education act was reversed by the Conservative government. However, the act had had little effect on education anyway. -
Education Act 1980'
Required schools to have at least two parents in their governing bodies. Also gave parents the right to choose schools and appeal if their children did not get into the schools they had chosen. The 'Assisted Places Scheme' would provide public money to pay for 30,000 children to go to private schools. The obligtion for LEAs to provide free milk to pupils was removed. -
Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (CATE)
Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (CATE) established to set standards for initial teacher training courses. -
National Council for Vocational Qualifications (NCVQ)
The NCVQ's aim was to promote national vocational qualifications. -
Local Governemnt Act
Attacked LEA's equal opportunities policies. Most notably forbade 'promoting teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship'. -
Education Action Zones
Education Action Zones (EAZs were conceived as the first steps towards privatisation of the schools. Clusters of schools in deprived areas worked together with government grants and funding from local businesses. -
Educational Reform Act
Introduced Grant Maintained Schools (Schools removed from Local Education Authority control and funded directly by the government), Local Management of Schools (Individual headteachers had financial control over their schools, and City Technology Colleges. More importantly, the act also established the National Curriculum and School "league tables", which allow parents to supposedly make an informed choice of school for their children. Replaced the school as public service with a market. -
Further and Higer Education Act
Removed further education and 6th form colleges from LEA control. Unified the funding of higher education. Introduced competition for funding between institutions. Polytechnics also became Universities. -

Teachers can keep pupils after school.
Allowed teachers to detain pupils after school without parents' consent, as well as use of "reasonable force" to restrain pupils. Amended the admission rules for selective schools, and for permanently excluded children. Abolished the NCVQ. Required all pupils access to a careers advice programme. Limited access to schools by non-employed adults. -

Student fees increased, so i paid 9000 thousand pounds a year for my course. If i applied the year before i would have paid less than hlaf that amount. -
