  • First American School

    This school was established to educate young men and prepare them for University entrance, it was a school that was offered to all boys regardless of their social class.
  • Harvard College

    This is the first higher education to be offered in the U.S. At this point women were seen in a school setting and it was seen for it to be more appropriate for man to get an education.
  • Old Deluder Satan Act

    This establishes that towns of 50 people or more are required to hire a teacher for reading and writing, this help people see that public education was good and important towards are county.
  • Franklin Academy

    This school eliminated religion, and focused on math, science, and navigation. At this time religion was a big part in all schools so this was not a normal thing.
  • Constitution

    The constitution removes religion from public schools and then goes into the state’s responsibility in education.
  • The Common School Movement

    Public schooling becomes free and is available to most students in the U.S.
  • Mt. Holy Oak Seminary

    This is the first female college to be established in the U.S.
  • The First Middle School

    Opens in Columbus OH, for grades 7-9
  • The Great Deppresion

    This event leads to less funding in schools and causes many public schools to close and many kids without anyways to get an education during this time.
  • Federal Funding

    To compete with Russia and improve our math and science education the government gave money to improve the public education system.
