  • First Public School Opens

    In Boston, Massachusetts, Named the Boston Latin School and was strictly for college education.
  • Common Schools Movement

    Horace Mann started it to bring state-sponsored public schools. Included the idea of a shared curriculum and the use of tax to fund public schools.
  • Measurement Movement

    Invention of IQ and the IQ test. Purpose was to be able to measure a human intelligence.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Supreme Court case that ruled that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional.
  • National Defense Education Act

    Created to strengthen the American school system through funds. Highly encouraged kids to continue there education.
  • Head Start Program

    Provides school readiness and supports child development from children birth to 5 years old in low income families.
  • Title IX

    Law that protects people from discrimination from sex in education programs or activities
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act(IDEA)

    A law that provides a free and appropriate public education to children with disabilities.
  • Standards Movement

    A national effort to set clear educational goals to prepare children for a high tech global economy.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    Law that held schools accountable for how they learn. Controversial for penalizing schools that don’t show improvement.
