    Boys from the middle class, the sons of merchants, ministers, doctors and lawyers, attended dame schools, elementary schools and grammar school. Rarely did they go to college.

    Impacted community and the church.
    Taught citizenship, showed the changing in education,less religion in school, Opened the first public library and Started a secondary school.
    School was for anyone who could pay tuition fee.

    The American Common School Period

    At the beginning of the 1840's most children were educated at home or in small country schoolhouses, where one teacher taught all grades,
    Education courses increasingly moved into regular colleges and universities.,
    Each district would provide a school for all children regardless of religion or social class.
    Private schools had to pay tuition and the new schools would be funded by taxes and special fees payed by parents.

    The American Progressive Period

    children worked many hours in factories. Which gave them fewer opportunities to achieve a education
    Then the progressive law passed which shorten the amount of hours children could work.
    Urban schools were overcrowded and the conditions were very poor.
    Teachers were considered professionals.
    African American teachers could only teach at African American schools
    There was an emphasis on educational theories. Teachers had to be well trained and qualified in order to guide a classroom.

    The 1920's and the Great Depression Era (1921-1940)

    parents had little to no money to buy supplies for their kids while trying to keep them fed and clothed.
    Kids eventually just dropped out of school. Schools had to respond to lost revenue.
    Public schools faced shortage of cash. since many citizens were unable to pay taxes.
