    During the colonial time period, formal education in a schoolhouse was reserved primarily for children who were wealthy, white, and male. Prior to attending the school house, their education often began at a dame school. The sons of farmers commonly obtained their education at home. While boys' studies were more academically based, girls were taught how to properly be the lady of the house. The main books of study for all were the Bible, a hornbook, and a primer.
