    FIRST PUBLIC SCHOOL
    The Boston Latin School was opened in 1635. It was not only the first public school in the U.S. but also holds the distinction of being the oldest public school in exsistence today. The Boston Latin School was attended by boys from many levels of society.

    The New England Primer
    The New England Primer would become one of the first textbooks that would be distributed in the U.S. educational system. Adapted from an English textbook and recreated for the New England colonies.
  • Jefferson ideal about The Laboring and the Learned

    Jefferson ideal about The Laboring and the Learned
    Thomas Jefferson proposes a two-track educational system, with different tracks in his words for "the laboring and the learned." Scholarship would allow a very few of the laboring class to advance, Jefferson says, by "raking a few geniuses from the rubbish." This ideal would surface throughout educational history. Some areas embraced it creating high schools for students wanting a trade and students wanting an academic career. The idea is once again surfacing in the 21st century.

    Rural to Urban and From School to Work
    The percentage of people working in agriculture plummets as family farms are gobbled up by larger agricultural businesses and people are forced to look for work in towns and cities. At the same time, cities grow tremendously, fueled by new manufacturing industries. Owners of industry needed a docile workers and look to the public school system to create these workers and prepare them for the future
  • The First Public High School

    The First Public High School
    Massachusetts passes a law making all grades of public school open to all pupils free of charge. This event changes the perception of the "student", making schooling for all and would set a precedent for free public education and equality in the United States.

    Education and Juvenile Law are combined.
    Massachusetts Reform School at Westboro opens, where children who have refused to attend public schools are sent. This begins a long tradition of "reform schools," which combine the education and juvenile justice systems.
  • Native American children forced to attend school

    Native American children forced to attend school
    The first compulsary schooling is seen in Native American populations in order to try and assimilate them into Anglo-Saxon culture. Developed by Henry Platt in order to try and create people who would contrtibute to society out of ethnic minorities. This idea would carry on into the future and create controversies like "seperate but equal".
