  • Brown v. Board of Education

    The Supreme Court ruled that it is unconstitutional for students to be segregated. This ruling was directed toward racial segregation but it laid the groundwork for parents to bring lawsuits against school districts for segregating students with disabilities.
  • President John F. Kennedy Assassination

    President John F. Kennedy is assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas, Texas.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    This act provided resources to help disadvantaged students have access to quality education. The act was initially designed for low-income families but it was amended in 1966 to establish a grant program to help with the "initiation, expansion, and improvement of programs and projects ... for the education of handicapped children".
  • First Men on the Moon

    Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the Apollo 11 mission became the first men to land on the moon.
  • Vocational Rehabilitation Act & Section 504

    This act prohibited discrimination against people with disabilities in federally funded programs. This act also helped to give a definition for appropriate education.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    A law enacted by congress to ensure that students with disabilities have a right to an education and that there will be a process to hold the State and local education agencies accountable for that education. This act introduced individualized education plans (IEP).
  • Sandra Day O'Connor

    Ronald Reagan selects Sandra Day O'Connor to the supreme court. O'Connor was the first female associate justice of the Supreme Court.
  • Handicapped Children's Protection Act

    Signed by President Reagan, this law gives parents more say in their child's IEP plan. This plan also extended Free and Appropriate Education to children ages 3-5.

  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    This act prohibited discrimination against people with disabilities in the workforce. It also provided equal opportunity for accommodations, services, transportation, and employment.

  • Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA)

    This act implemented mediation to resolve differences in IEPs and allowed the General Education teacher to be a part of the IEP team. This act also introduced behavior management plans and allowed students with disabilities to take state tests.
  • IDEA Amendment

    IDEA was amended to include early intervention for students, greater accountability for special education programs, raise the standards for special education instructors, and improve educational outcomes. This amendment also required school districts to move up to 15% of their special education funds to general education if a disproportionate number of minority students were placed in special education fo reasons other than disability.
