Formation of the Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw Pact was the Soviet's response to the creation of NATO. The Warsaw Pact was a communist version of NATO, which basically stated the other states could help each other if they are attacked. The pact meant that Europe was officially divided into two opposing military forces. -
Sputnik Launch
The first manmade satellite to be launched into orbit. Created by the Soviet Union, this caused quite a panic in the United States due to thoughts of Russia sending rockets into orbit as weapons. This started the space race. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was a major event in which the U.S. felt threatened by Cuba's installment of nuclear weaponry. The President at the time, John Kennedy inacted a naval blockade on Cuba. The Crisis finally ended when Cuba promised to take down the missiles in order of the U.S. not invading them.
