    Martin Luther

    Martin Luther advocated that schools should teach children how to read. He wanted children to learn how to read in their native tounge. His vision and teachings were much related to the bible which is not the case now a days but his passion for wanting children to read plays a huge role is teaching children the importance of reading.
  • John Comenius

    He worte the first ever children picture book which is called Orbis Pictus. He also believed education should occur through senses. He is said to be the father of modren education I believe through his pictures books which are so important in education today.
  • Robert Owen

    Robert Owen believed that children's environments contribute to their beliefs, behavior and achievements. He opened up the first early childhood school in New Lanark Scotland in 1816 which then led to the first early childhood school to open in London in 1818.
  • Idea of Universal Preschool in the U.S.

    In 1830 the Infant School Society of Boston submitted a petition to incorporate infant schools into Boston Public Schools.
  • Erik Erikson

    Erik Erikson introduced children's emotional and congnitive development may determine how parents and teachers interact with children and how they care for them.
  • Lev Vygotsky Theory

    Vygotsky believed that children's mental, language and social development are supported through social interactions. He believed that children seek these interactions in adults which makes what we teach them and how we act is so vital in their development.
  • Sputnik

    After World War II The Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the first ever satellite. This sparked fear in the U,S, as they didnt want to lose any kind of world power so in defense the U.S. congress passed the National Defense Education Act in 1958. This provided federal funding for Science, Technology, Engineering, math and foreign language. They believed their best defense would be in education.
  • Early Head Start Program

    The Economic Opportunity Act provided the begining of head start in 1965. The Head Start Program assists in early childhood education, health, nutrition and amoung other things with low income families. It was orginally a catch-up summer school program to get children and families ready for elementary school. It still to this day plays a huge role in early childhood education.
  • Civil Rights Act - Equal Opportunity in Education Act

    In 1972 the Congress passed the Civil Rights Act now know as the Equal Opportunity in Education Act to ensure all individuals were treated equally. It protects our constitutional rights in Education.
