Magna Carta
The Magna Carta established the critical idea that the monarchy's power was not absolute. It provides a basis for much of government today. -
Petition of Right
It was created on this day but wasn't ratified until June 7th, 1628. This limited the king's power in a number of ways, including the inability to imprison or punish any person by the lawful judgement of his peers or by the law of the land. -
English Bill of Rights
It inspired the Bill of RIghts of the United States. It sets limits on the power of covereign and sets out rights of different things. -
Albany Plan
It was proposed by Benjamin Franklin in Albany, New York. It attempted to unite the thirteen colonies. -
Boston Massacre
It was part of the American Revolution. Five civilians were killed and another six were injured from the attacking British troops. -
Boston Tea Party
In it's time it was referred to as the "destruction of tea." Colonists boarded the ship and cast three shiploads of tea into the Boston Harbor. -
First Continental Congress
It began on this day and ended on October 26th, 1774. John Adams, Samuel Adams, and George Washington are just three of the 56 delegates that were present. -
Second Continental Congress
It was a convention of representatives from the thirteen colonies. They debated on and passed many different governmental documents pertaining to rights, freedoms, and other governmental issues that mattered at the time. -
Declaration of Independence
Adopted by the Continental Congressthat stated the 13 colonies would act as independent states. The principle author was Thomas Jefferson. -
Articles of Confederation
On this date, it had been ratified, though it was first thought up on Novermber 15th, 1777. It was made in hopes to move toward making a constitution. -
Shay's Rebellion
Took place in central Massachusetts and lasted until June 1787. It was caused by economic depression, aggressive tax and debt collection, and State fiscal policy. -
Philadelphia Convention
It began on this day and concluded on September 17th, 1787. Also known as the Grand Convention. -
Virginia Plan
It proposed structure of government. It's also known as the Randolph Plan, or the Large-State Plan. -
New Jersey Plan
Proposed by William Patterson at the Constitutional Convention. It was a response the the Virginia Plan, was a suggestion for the structure of the US government, and is also known as the Small State plan/The Patterson Plan.
