Battle of Iwo Jima
The U.S. Marines stormed the beaches of the Island Iwo Jima. The marines made easy targets for the Japanese, who dug miles of tunnels and built multiple concrete bunkers throughout the island. The Marines, although at a disadvantage, took over Suribachi and raised the United States flag. -
VE Day
Victory in Europe. Germany surrenders to the Red Army in Berlin. -
VJ Day
The war finally ends on Sept. 2, 1945. Japan Surrenders on USS Missouri.
