Rwanda
Rwandan refugees, mainly Hutu, fled into the Eastern states of the DRC. -
Joining Forces
The Rwandan and Ugandan armies joined with the Congolese opposition leader Laurent Désiré Kabila. They wanted to take down dictator Mobutu Sese Seko. -
Invasion
Rwanda and Uganda invaded eastern DRC to seek out the remaining perpetrators of the Rwandan genocide. -
Takeover
In December, the opposing forces fully took over eastern Congo. -
New Government
In May, they overthrew Mobutu's government. Laurent Désiré Kabila is now the president. He renames the country the Democratic Republic of Congo instead of Zaire. -
Leaving Forces
Kabila ordered Rwanda and Uganda's armies to leave eastern DRC. He did this because he was scared they were going to steal DRC's minerals. -
Retaliation
Rwanda and Uganda were mad that he did that so they invade the DRC again. -
Trying to Gain more Power
Later in August, Rwanda and Uganda try to outsmart the DRC by trying to fly their troops to Kinshasa (DRC's capital). -
Plan Fails
Rwanda and Uganda don't succeed in taking over the capital. Angola and Zimbabwe helped the DRC to overcome the opposing armies in the capital. -

MLC
Uganda supported a new rebel army called the Movement for the Liberation of Congo (MLC). They wanted to capture the north. With help from foreign troops and government forces, they raided villages and committed mass killings. -
Uganda Makes Peace with DRC
Uganda and DRC made peace with each other. They form The Forces for Renewal. Together, they still fight the Rwandan troops. -
Stalemate
The seven countries involved had a stalemate so they signed the Lusaka Ceasefire agreement. -
Assassination
President Kabila got assassinated by his bodyguard. His son Joseph Kabila took over. -

Peace
April 2002: the Sun City Agreement gets signed. July 2002: Pretoria Accord was signed by Rwanda and the DRC. July 2003: the Transitional Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo takes over and all countries leave the DRC.
