Rwandan refugees, mainly Hutu, fled into the Eastern states of the DRC.

The Rwandan and Ugandan armies joined with the Congolese opposition leader Laurent Désiré Kabila. They wanted to take down dictator Mobutu Sese Seko.

In May, they overthrew Mobutu's government. Laurent Désiré Kabila is now the president. He renames the country the Democratic Republic of Congo instead of Zaire.

Kabila ordered Rwanda and Uganda's armies to leave eastern DRC. He did this because he was scared they were going to steal DRC's minerals.

Later in August, Rwanda and Uganda try to outsmart the DRC by trying to fly their troops to Kinshasa (DRC's capital).

Rwanda and Uganda don't succeed in taking over the capital. Angola and Zimbabwe helped the DRC to overcome the opposing armies in the capital.

Uganda supported a new rebel army called the Movement for the Liberation of Congo (MLC). They wanted to capture the north. With help from foreign troops and government forces, they raided villages and committed mass killings.

Uganda and DRC made peace with each other. They form The Forces for Renewal. Together, they still fight the Rwandan troops.

The seven countries involved had a stalemate so they signed the Lusaka Ceasefire agreement.

President Kabila got assassinated by his bodyguard. His son Joseph Kabila took over.

April 2002: the Sun City Agreement gets signed. July 2002: Pretoria Accord was signed by Rwanda and the DRC. July 2003: the Transitional Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo takes over and all countries leave the DRC.
