Haraway's Beginnings
Donna Jeanne Haraway was born in Denver, Colorado on September 6th, 1944 to a Catholic family. Her father, Frank O. Haraway, wrote about sports for the Denver Post and passed away in 2005 and her mother, Dorothy Maguire Haraway, died of a heart attack when Haraway was only 16 years old. And it was her father who helped to manifest her love of writing. -
Studies and Education
Haraway earned a degree in zoology and philosophy at Colorado College on a full scholarship and spent a year in Paris after graduating to study Philosophy and theology at the Fondation Teilhard de Chardin on another full scholarship. After this, Haraway completed her PhD in Biology at Yale in 1972 with "interdisciplinary arrangements" in the departments of Biology, Philosophy, and the History of Science and Medicine. -
A Cyborg Manifesto
Donna Haraway has written a plethora of books, essays, and more over the span of her still continuing career. However, one of the her most notable pieces of work would have to be "A Cyborg Manifesto" that was first published in 1985. Her concept of the cyborg is a rejection of traditional boundaries, mainly those separating human, animal, and machine from each other. It also deeply criticizes old notions of feminism and gender, especially in politics. -
Haraway's Current Career
Donna Haraway is currently an extremely distinguished Professor Emerita in the History of Consciousness Department and Feminist studies at the University of California in Santa Cruz. She has written countless pieces of work and continues to do lectures around the world. In 2000 Haraway was awarded the J. D. Bernal Award which is the highest honor given by the Society for Social Studies of Science because of her distinguish work in the field. -
