    Germany's invasion of Poland
    Germans attacked Poland and bombed there airfields and Polish naval forces.At this time it was 4:45 a.m. so Poland was not excpecting the attack. The reason for these attacks on Poland was because Hitler thought it would bring more living space for the Germans. Poland then declared war on Germany on September 3 beginning World War II.     Fall of Paris
    The Germans entered the City of Paris. When they entered the city they announced to the people that there was an 8:00 p.m. curfew. When the Germans entered the city 2 million people had run away. The Germans arrested and interrogated people. They also spied on the French. The Germans set up a flag with a swastika at the Arc de Triomphe.

    Operation Barbarossa
    Adolf Hitler sent his armies in a massive invasion to the Soviet Union.There were three armies in this battle. The reason for Germany's attack was because they wanted to expand. The effect of this was that Germany failed this attack and were forced to eventually surrender.     Pearl Harbor
    The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor Naval Base with hundreds of fighter planes. The attack lasted two hours. The United.States was mad with Japan for being aggresivley hostile towards China. Japan thought that Pearl Harbor was a perfect place to attack because we wouldn't be able to attack them. The effect of Pearl Harbor was that Japenesse was able to destroy 20 American naval vessels, eight enormous battleships, 300 plus aircrafts, 2,000 people died and 1,000 people were wounded.

    Wannsee Conference
    Nazi officals meet on this day to discuss how to get rid of the Jews. The reason for this is because Hitler hated Jews which caused the whole Nazi party to hate them. The cause of this meeting was that 1,000s of Jews were dying a day at the hands of Germany. The place they killed the Jews was at the gas vans in Chelmno, Poland.     Bataan Death March
    The U.S. surrendered the Bataan Pennisula on the Phillipine island of Luzon. There were about 75,000 American and Filipino troops that had to walk on a 65 mile jouney to prison camps. The walk had harsh weather and there were people who starved, beaten and even bayoneted. The result of these marches there were about 1,000 Americans and 9,000 Filipinos.

    Battle of Midway
    After Pearl Harbor, the Japanese wanted to destroy the rest of the United States navy ships. But the U.S. figured out the code for the Japanese plans. On June 4, the U.S. found the Japanese at Midway Island. The Japanese were refueling their carriers and planes. The Americans sank four carriers with 322 airplanes and a heavy cruiser. The U.S. only lost 147 planes and 300 soldiers.

    Operation Gomorrah
    British bombers raided a German city named Hamburg. Britain was bombed by Germany and Britan was getting revenge. In the first raid more than 1,500 Germans civillians were killed by the bombings. After all the attacks 30,000 Germans died and 280,000 buildings were destroyed. After this attack dictator Hitler refused to see the ruins of the cities. Many journalist at this time descibe this time as despair as they look to come to terms with defeat.

    The British began the invasion of Italy. They landed on the "toe" of Italy. On the day of the invasion the Italians has agreed to surrender. The dictator Mussolini wanted to make a new Roman Empire. But they lost a lot of battles in the war and ended up having to do what Germany wanted. The Italians were tired of Mussolini and wanted to surrender to the Allies. So when the British invaded Italy they didn't have to fight much.

    D-Day Normandy Invasion
    On this day 156,000 American, Canadian and British forces landed on Normandy beaches in France. The reason for the attack was that Germany had taken over France and America wanted to get it back for them. This war later made Germans surrender in the next spring. At the end of the battle more than 4,000 allies were dead or missing. In one of the battles on Omaha beach there were more than 2,000 American casualties.

    Battle of the Bulge
    Hitler wanted to split up the allies in northwest Europe. The Germans did a blitzkrieg attack in the Ardennes to Antwerp. The Germans attacked with a quarter of a million soldiers. The area had a lot of mountains and forests. It also started snowing during the attacks. The Americans were not ready and didn't have much experience. But they won two battles that helped them stop the Germans. The Allied front looked like a large bulge. That is how it got its name.

    This battle was on an island and America attacked Japanesse territores. The reason for the attacks was that America needed a base near Japan. Iwo Jima was defended by about 23,000 Japanesse navy troops and army. The effect was 5,900 dead and 17,400 wounded Americans. The picture was when America won and put the U.S. flag in the ground to show that it was America's land now.

    Battle of Okinawa
    In this battle U.S. attacked Japan bases in one of the bloodiest marine wars in history. The attack was because U.S needed a base near Japan. The effects of this battle was that just on the ground there were 7,374 killed, 31,807 wounded and 239 missing. Then the navy had 4,907 people dead, 34 ships sunk, 368 damaged. This place was also highly populated so there were about 100,000 civllian casualties.

    VE Day
    On this day the Nazis surendered and both U.S. and Great Britan celebrated. Germany surrendered because they were surrounded by the soviets and many other countries. That same day Hitler commited suicide. Than millions tried to escape but were caught by the Russians and taken captive. The impact was that Germany was out of the war and the only two left was Italy and Japan.

    Dropping of the atomic bomb
    American and Canadian scientists made a bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima Japan. This bomb killed 90 percent of the city, 80,000 people and tens of thousands more after radiation. Then when Japan did not surrender they dropped another atomic bomb in Nagasaki Japan. After the bomb was realeased Japan surrendered. The bombs were equal to 12-15,000 tons of TNT.

    On this day Japan surrendered after the atomic bombs were realeased. The years after, America did not celebrate because of Japan being offended. 1995 was the 50th anniversry of world war 2 ending. The impact of this event was that the war was over. The only state that has a holiday deticated to VJ-Day is Rhode Island.
