Disruptions

  • #blacklivesmatter

    #blacklivesmatter
In 2013 Trayvon Martin, a young African-American man, was shot by a white police officer. The movement began with the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter. This was the beginning of a huge movement to hold government officials, specifically cops, accountable for institutionalized racism.
It was first on Twitter and has spread. It often accompanies images and videos of policemen mistreating black people.
  • The Kiling of Harambe

    The Kiling of Harambe
In 2016, a 3-year old child climbed into the pen of an adult gorilla in the Cincinnati zoo. The Gorilla was shot immediately to protect the child and it caused great controversy. This began a huge movement for protecting animals and seeking justice for Harambe, the gorilla.
Many hashtags, memes and GIF's emerged from this movement, and it continues to be present in social media today. All platforms have been used, and especially Facebook in order to try and reach officials. #JusticeforHarambe
  • Election of President Donald Trump

    Election of President Donald Trump
This was a huge disruption because no one with the background that Donald Trump has has ever been elected. Many people were (and still are) extremely angry and worried for what he would do during his presidency. The hashtag that seems to really capture the anger of many leftist citizens is #notmypresident, meaning he is elected, but not chosen.
This movement began on Twitter as people realized that President Trump was extremely active on Twitter, but has spread to other platforms.
  • #believewomen

    #believewomen
This disruption was when Brett Kavanah was nominated for the supreme court, and Dr. Christine Blasey Ford accused him of sexually assaulting her years prior. A few other women also claimed to have been sexually assaulted by Kavanah. The movement began when it was clear that the court was in favor of Kavanah. The push is to believe women when they come forward, and not question their stories. The primary platforms with this hashtag were Twitter, and Instagram.
  • #time'sup

    #time'sup
After the #metoo movement erupted, many celebrities began to come out with stories about being sexually abused by Hollywood producers. This term "time's up" refers to the movement that began on January 1st 2018 in response to Harvey Weinstein. The most popular platform for this hashtag was Twitter, this is where it began.
