Welcome to Virginia
The first pernament English colony in the New World. -
Anthony Johnson
Anthony Johnson, an African, arrivved in Virginia in 1621. He name was Antonio at the time. He was caught in Africa by slave traders. He passed from one owner to the next until he arrived in Virginia. He then changed his name to Anthony Johnson. -
Period: to
Diminishing Progress
Shortly after the time Anthony Johnson's arrival marks the begining of Diminishing Progress which caused slavery as we know it to be (violent, cruel, evil, against God etc....) Slaves were later freed by the Emacipation Proclamation in 1863 and later gained equal rights. -
The Powhatan Massacre
This happened when a Powhatan tribe attacked a plantation and of the 57 people there, only Anthony and four others survived. -
Period: to
Anthony as a Servent
Anthony Johnson worked on the Bennet plantation where he married Marie, a slave and had four childeren. -
Sold!!!!
Anthony's family begins to sell their land to neighboring white farmers. The future of Anthony's childeren and grandchilderen was quickly diminishing. -
Freedom
Anthony and Marie Johnson had gained their freedom from being servents. -
Farmland
Anthony and Marie Johnson own 250 acres of land/farmland, a herd of cattle, and two black servents. They were of the few Negro's who even owned land, much less cattle or servents. -
Fire!!!!
Anthony's house is burned down by a fire in 1652 and the lines of raciel slavery closed on Free Blacks. Things begin to go downhill for the Johnson family -
The ill Winds
Anthony Johnson dies leaving his wife and four childeren. They had been renting land and having live off of very little money. What little land he still owned, was awarded to a White Plantation owner instead of it being being deeded to his family as it was stated in his WILL. This was because Anthony was a Negro, and "technically" an alien. -
ACT III
The Baptism of slaves does not free them from slavery. This represents diminishing progess because this is one of the first laws to restrict the rights of Negros. It gave more power to the English and destroyed the hopes of slaves. This is a step towards slavery the way we know it to be. -
ACT I
This law allowed the casual punishment and killing of slaves. Whites belived it would correct slaves. This gave them more power and slaves had to obey every command carefully. This is a step towards slavery the way we know it to be. -
ACT XXII
All slaves, indians, and mulatto's (half black, Indian, or white) are real estate. This law made all slaves "things." It gave English men complete control over coloreds. This is the final step towards slavery the way we know it to be. -
For You
What is your oponion of Anthony and/or Diminishing progress for Negro's? -
Fatal Disabilities
In the beggining, being colored was a disability, later, it was a fatal handicap. As Anthony Johnson saw in his later life. -
Emancipation Proclamation
This document, singned by president Abraham Lincoln, freed all slaves.
