Zacharias Jansen and Hans
Produced the first compound microscope by combinging two convex lenses within a tube. This allowed Robert Hooke to view the walls of a piece of cork in 1663. Cell Theory. (n.d.). Retrieved September 20, 2015. -
Robert Hooke
Using a microscope, Hooke viewed empty spaces contained by walls in a piece of cork and named them cells. Robert Hooke and The Discovery of the Cell. (2009, September 9). Retrieved September 20, 2015. -
Anton van Leeuwenhoek
Anton discovered single-celled life forms using the microscope he made that could magnify up 270x. In 1676 he was the first person to see bacteria in water. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek. (n.d.). Retrieved September 20, 2015. -
Matthias Jacob Schleiden
While looking at a plant structure under a microscope, he found that the different parts of the plant organism are made up of cells or derivatives of cells.
All cells are made of other cells. Matthias Jacob Schleiden | biography - German botanist. (n.d.). Retrieved September 20, 2015. -
Theodore Schwann
While doing microscopic research on the conformity on structure and growth of plants and animals, Schwann recognized structures that were similar to what Schleiden had observed in plants. He extended the cell theory stating that all living things are composed of cells. Cells are a basic unit to life Schwann, Theodor (1810-1882) -- from Eric Weisstein's World of Scientific Biography. (n.d.). Retrieved September 20, 2015. -
Robert Virchow
He stated that all living things come from other living things. With this published he launched the field of cellular pathology. He stated that all diseases involve changes in normal cells. Schultz, M. (n.d.). Rudolf Virchow. Retrieved September 20, 2015. -
Modern cell theory
- All living things are made up of cells
- Cells are the basci unit of structure and function in living things
- Living cells come only from other living cells
