Cotton Gin
Eli Whitney created the Cotton Gin in 174 while he was working in Georgia on a plantation as a private tutor. He wanted tio find a way to make growing cotton more profitable.

Slavery Abolished in North
By 1808, most of the northern states had abolished slavery. The abolition was not immediate, it was a gradual process. Some slaves were bound to serve until a certain period in their lives, and then they would be set free.

Tariff of 1816
Prior to the War of 1812, British goods were once again coming into the Unites States. Congress imposed the Tariff of 1816, which was designed to protect American industry. This increased the price of imported good by 20 to 25 percent, influencing the Americans to buy American produced goods. -
Workingmen's Party

Proslavery forces deny the stance of Antislavery forces
By the 1850's, pro slavery forces denied the stance of Jefferson, Madison, and Washington for slavery. They believed it to be a positibe good. They also believed that it was better for African Americans to be slaves than to be free and dpending on industiralization to support them. -
Increase in Free People in the North
In 1850, the North had twice the amount of free people as the South. This increased the political power of the North, especially in the House of Representatives. Price of Slaves Increase in South
The price of slaves in the south tripled in price, going from $600 a slave to $1,800. Also, by 1860, the number of slaves in the south grew from 1.5 million to 4 million. Slavery was still flourishing in the south, illegally. -
Slavery Declines
By 1860, only 1/4 of white men owned slaves. 3/4 of these men owned less than 10 slaves, and only about 3000 white men had 100 or more slaves. Most slave owners lived in a farmhouse and had only 4 or 5 slaves. -
Population of 1860's America
In 1860 only one southern city was ranked as one of America's top 15 cities: New Orleans. Population grew very slowly because the south lacked the commercial towns needed to boost population and the industrial economy.
