Developmental Timeline

  • Birth

    Birth
    Development begins in the fetus far before the child is born. A fetus often sucks its' thumb, without ever breast feeding or having a bottle. Newborn children have the ability to see, hear, smell and respond to the environment. These senses allow the infant to adapt to its' environment. The birth comes as a shock to the infant, with the all the senses being stimulated, including the extreme changes in temperatures.

  • Infancy

    Infancy
    A newborn child is born with reflexes such as; rooting, grasping and babinski. The grasping reflix consist of the infant grasping tightly when their palms are touched. This fades after about three months. The rooting reflex is when the infants cheek is brushed; its' head turns, the mouth opens and it begins sucking. This reflex fades after about four months. The Babinski reflex is when something is run up an infant's foot; they flare their toes and push toward the stimulus.: gone at 2 years
  • Childhood

    Childhood
    Ages:2-12
    Piaget's stages of cognitive development include; sensorimotor, preoperational,concrete operational, and formal operational. Erikson's stages of psychological development believe that childhood experiences impact an individual, bur development is a life long process. Kholberg's stages of moral development are concerned with our justification of right and wrong. Finally, Freud's psychosexual development believe that everyone is born with powerful, aggressive, and sexual urges.
  • Confirment to Church

    Confirment to Church
    When I was 11 years old I received confirmation into my church. This marked an important milestone in my life seeing as it was the first time I had been offically accepted into a community, other than my family. It also marked the beginning of my faith and religion.
  • Adolesence

    Adolesence
    Age:12-18
    Adolesence is the time period in which a person goes through many changes, as they pass from a child to an adult. The thickening of the frontal cortex during this period can be held responsible for these changes. A person begins to think abstractly and hypothetically. They begin to find fault with authority figures, and often challenge the authority. They begin to develop relationships with peers, and move away from their family.
  • First Job

    First Job
    My first job was being an umpire for the CVU chapter. This job in particular forced me to step into leadership shoes. Along with the leadership came many responsibilities. I had to be able to interact with all types of people and emotions.
  • Driver's License

    Driver's License
    When I received my driver's license it marked a whole new set of responsibiliy and freedom. I was no longer dependent on my parents for rides, allowing me to hangout with my friends as much as I wanted. This contributed to my socialization during adolescence.
  • Early Adulthood

    Early Adulthood
    Age: 20-28
    Most of us reach our prime physical condition in our 20's. Our immune systems, senses, and mental skills operate at maximum effiency. We have better problem-solving, coordination, and strategy skills in our mid 20's than in adolesence. Our personality is flexible and capable of changing as we confront new tasks.

  • Marriage

    Marriage
    I plan on getting married after I am out of military. This is an important milestone, because it marks the first intimate relationship that I will have in my life. This type of relationship is a key part of adulthood.
  • Children

    Children
    Having children is an important part of development, because it marks the first time that you must completely provide for someone other than yourself. You must be in full support of your children or they will not make it.
  • Middle Adulthood

    Middle Adulthood
    Age: 30-50
    In our thirties and forties, we may become less active and start to gain weight. By our late 40's our heart rate, lung capacity, muscle strength and eyesight slighty decrease. We gain more knowledge and wisdom as we get older and go through more experiences. However, our reaction time begins to slow as we get older. Adult males go through a time period where they question their identity thus far. They have to decide whether they are content or want to find something "new".
  • Late Adulthood

    Late Adulthood
    Ages: 48-65
    In our fifties and sixties we experience gradual bone loss and decrease in lung output. Our skin wrinkles and our joints detiorate. Additonally, our organs become less efficent. People continue to acquire information and increase vocabulary. Women find that nature of their marriage changes after children. Mothers experience empty-nest syndrome when their last child moves out. They focus on new interests and activites that they didn't have time for when they were raising childre
  • Retirement

    Retirement
    When a person retires they often face many problems with that sudden change. They feel like they have lost their identity and don't know what to do with themselves. Retirement leads to a loss in social networking too. Most retired people find a hobby or activity, such as golf to keep them busy and meet new people with similar interest.
  • Old Age

    Old Age
    In old age, our bodies start to deterioate, leading to loss of height. By exercising the mind daily you can delay the mental decline (Alzhiemers). Alzhiemers is a degeneration of acetylcholine which produces neurons, as a result memory is the first thing to go. People face issues with loss of idetity after retirement. Which is why most older people adopt new hobbies or activities. Erickson's final stage of Integrity vs. Despair is present during these years.
  • Stages of Death and Dying

    Stages of Death and Dying
    Elizabeth Kubler Ross has five stages of death and dying. The first stage is denial, in which a person refuses to believe that it is happen to them. The second stage is anger toward fate, doctors, powers that be, or family members. The third stage is bargaining, in which person attempts to strike a deal with a higher power for time in exchange for good behavior. The fourth stage is depression; people focus on the losses incurred. The final stage is acceptance; a sense of calme and peace towa
