    The Industrial Revolution started a new beginning in the manufacturing field. This new beginning included chemicals, heavy equipment, which caused an expected growth in population.

    A good percentage of textile workers were children. Children were expected to work long hour shifts like adults, but only received little pay. Many children died young because of the smoke ventilation and chemicals they inhaled through working in unsafe factory conditions. During this time, children all around the began going into the work field to help support families. Often times, children did not go to school or were homeschooled so that way they had time to go to work.

    Because factories demanded a high number of employees to help make products and run the equipment. Many factory workers worked 14-15 hour shifts with only one day during the week. Even though they worked long hours, they received little pay.
  • The Factory Act

    The Factory Act
    The British Parliament created the "Factory Act", which stated that children under the age of 9 years old could only work 8-hour shifts. Then children older could work between 12-14 hours.
  • Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire

    Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire
    Was one of the deadliest fires in New York City history. The fire killed 146 workers- 123 women and 23 men who died from either smoke ventilation or jumping from the building to save themselves. The fire was believed to be caused by an unextinguished cigarette. They worked 52 hours and received 7-12, which is equivalent to $119-$327 in 2018 currency.
  • International Labor Organization

    International Labor Organization
    ILO was established in 1919 in order to bring governments and workers together. The purpose is to promote rights for all in work conditions, promote decent work opportunities, and bring awareness to social protection among all. While working closely with other governments helped to ensure that all these policies were being implemented.
  • The Fair Labor Standards Act

    The Fair Labor Standards Act
    This law was implemented because factor workers worked AT LEAST 52 hours a week. The Fair Labor Standards requires workers all around to work 40 hour pay period shifts. Also, provides guidelines on wages, child labor, overtime, etc.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Civil Rights Act of 1964
    This is a civil law, which was created to move away against discrimination towards a specific minority group, sex, religion, etc in the United States. It prohibits unlawful discrimination against anyone in work fields or within school systems.

    Technology has vastly changed throughout the decades from huge desktops to small tablets. During the industrial revolution, workers used heavy machinery and equipment daily and many have gotten hurt because of this. Now that technology has advanced, it has helped improve the over quality of performance and reduced safety risk.

    Today
    Because of past historical events, there are now new laws and policies to protect workers. Children are now required to go to school instead of spending long hours in factories, farms, or etc. Child labor statistics have been reduced tremendously throughout the years. Now people have the right to request work, request certain benefits from work. People can work in safe environments and receive the proper pay for their labor.
