First School for Deaf

Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet founds the first school for deaf and dumb in Hartford Conneticut. He did this to better educate those with hearing loss.Normally they would go without schooling.It was a major jump from simply ignoring the deaf and their education.

Electrical Hearing Aid

First electric hearing aid was created immediatly after Alexander Graham Bell's success with the telephone.It amplified acoustic sounds and took many other aspects from the telephone. This was the first step for deaf to communicate with electronic machinery.

Deaf in World War 1

Jul 23, 1914

Deaf are not allowed to serve in World war 1 as they are seen as unfit for battle.This continued into World War 2 as the deaf community are still held bhack from fighting for their country.

Teletypewriter

Jan 1, 1964

The first electric teletypewriter was created allowing deaf persons to use the phone.This device would allow deaf people to better merge into society.

Rehaqbilitation Act

Sep 26, 1973

Rehabilitation Act of 1973 provided many oportunities for the deaf. However sign language the main language used by people without hearing was still not considered a language an therefore did not fall under the bilingual education act that was passed some ten years prior.
