Papa Dies
Dave comes home to find that his papa has fallen off a roof that he was fixing and died. Dave denies it for a while, thinking his papa with get back up and start walking an talking, but he accepts it after a while. -
Dave Becomes an Orphan
Shortly after the funeral for papa, during the reception, Ida announces she cannot keep Gideon and Dave. Uncle Jack takes Gideon, but leaves Dave. No one in the family wants Dave, so after a week of shiva, Ida takes Dave to the HHB. (Hebrew Home for Boys) -
Dave Sneaks out of the HHB
Dave sneaks out of the HHB by climbing a tree and jumping over the fence. Once Dave is out, he meets Solly and Bandit. Solly takes Dave to a rent party, where he has a great time. -
Dave is Beat up by Mr. Doom
Dave tries to get back into the HHB, but Mr. Meltzer catches him and takes him to Mr. Doom. Dave calls Mr. Doom a theif when he realizes Mr. Doom stole his carving. Mr. Doom grabed his yard stick and tried to beat Dave. Dave got injured, but not badly. -
Dave Meets Mr. Hillinger
Dave walks into his classroom to find a stranger at the door. This man was named Mr. Hillinger. He was the HHB art teacher. That day Dave learned about gesture drawing and began to develope a liking for art. -
Irma Lee's Party
Solly comes to the HHB to pick up Dave for Irma Lee's party. When they get there, there is a lot of famous people and it is very crowded. Dave goes to see Irma Lee, where he draws her and tells her he is an orphan. -
Dave Creates a Plan with his Buddies
Dave wants to get his carving back from Mr. Doom, so he creates a plan with his buddies. They think that they should keep watch on Mr. Doom's office to figure out when he leaves or locks the door. They devise a plan to take turns walking with a partner up and down the hallway next to Mr. Doom's office, to seem as if they are going to the restroom or the library. -
Solly, Aunt Sarah, and Aunt Lily Visit Dave
On visiting day, Dave is suddenly greeted by Solly at the HHB. Solly talks with Dave and gives him a bag of small foods. After that Aunt Sarah and Lily visit Dave and also give him a sack of foods. -
Mr. Doom Beats Up Fred
Mr. Doom invites the twins, Fred and Jeff, to have dinner with him. Only, when they get there, there isn't any food, just Mr. Doom sitting in a chair. He keeps talking to them, getting angrier and angrier, until Fred tries to run. Mr. Doom lunges for him, but Fred gets out the door. Fred tries to run away, but falls off a balcony and brakes his arm. Mr. Doom then starts beating him while he's on the ground. -
Jeff gets Key to Mr. Doom's Cabinet
While Mr. Doom was chasing Fred, trying to beat him, Jeff reached into Mr. Doom's drawer and got the key to Mr. Doom's cabinet. Once Jeff got back, he gave Dave the key. Now Dave could get his carving back. -
Dave gets Eli to Gonif Moe
Dave devises a plan to stop Moe and the other bullies from stealing their food. He acts like Eli is a wizard and plays it out that he has powers. Moe, being superstitious, belives him. Eli pretends that the "phantoms" are mad at Moe for stealing their food, so Moe stops. -
Dave Goes to Irma Lee's House Again
Dave sneaks out of the HHB and waits at the Tree of Hope for Solly. To his surprise, a chauffeur picks him up and says that Mrs. Packard and Irma Lee have been waiting. Dave is driven to Irma Lee's house, where he is then led to the dinner table.
