English Country Dancing
When America was first colonized this was a popular form of dance in Europe, therefore it was popular in the states. -
Virginia Reel
The Virginia Reel was danced during the 18th and 19th centuries. It is done to folk songs and may have Scottish country dance origins. -
Viennese Waltz
Very different from its form today it is the first ballroom dance done in the closed hold position. This was also the original waltz. -
Buffalo Dance
Mandan, Sioux, Cheyenne, Pawnee, Omaha and other Native American tribes perform this dance during the festival that takes place when the buffalo return. -
Waltz
There are many different styles of waltzes. It is a ballroom and fold dance that is mainly done in the closed position. -
Cakewalk
The Cakewalk is like a Prizewalk, the winning couple is awarded an enormous cake at the end. -
Cancan
This dance is usual performed by a chorus line in females wearing long skirts, petticoats and black tights. -
Two-Step
The Two-Step is found in many different folk dances. It gets its name from a 19th century Polka dance. -
Charleston
The Charleston is most commonly associated with flappers and speakeasies. -
Jitterbug
This dance is similar to various types of swing dances such as the Lindy Hop and the Jive. -
The Limbo
Limbo began as part of an event in Trinidad and Tobago and was made popular by Julia Edwards. -
The Chicken
A popular rythm and blues dance where the dancers imitate chickens by flapping their arms and kicking their legs back. -
The Swim
The swim is basically the Twist with added motions meant to imitate swimming. -
Mashed Potato
A popular dance craze that resembles the Twist. -

The Hully Gully is a form of unstructured line dance. -
The Watusi
The second most popular dance craze in the 60's. It's a solo dance that is done in a stationary position. -
Disco
Dances like the hustle fall under this category. Danced to music with nice beats and synthesizers. -
YMCA
All this dance is, putting your arms in the air and forming the letters Y.M.C.A. -
The Running Man
Sliding your feet back to make it appear as if you are running in place. -
Thriller Dance
The dance was part of Michael Jackson's music video to Thriller. The dancers make it appear as if they are zombies or something of that sort. -
Vogue
Dancers simply make rigid body movements with their arms and legs. Made popular by Madonna in her music video "Vogue". -
The Hammer Dance
Made popular by MC Hammer's "Hammer Time". With your legs wide shuffle your feet quickly back and forth and you've done the Hammer Dance. -
The Macarena
The song didn't have a dance to it until it came to America, where it quickly became a dance that most everyone knows.
