It was released in October 1997 for DOS and Microsoft Windows, and on 14 December 1997 for the PlayStation. The game allows the player to take on the role of a criminal who can roam freely around a big city. Various missions are set for completion, such as bank robberies, assassinations, and other crimes. It is the first title in the Grand Theft Auto series

    In October 1997 the company released (through the short-lived BMG Interactive label) Grand Theft Auto for the PC whilst neighbouring developer Visual Sciences converted the PlayStation version. Initially called Race and Chase, development began in 1995 with a relatively inexperienced team after a large group of new artists and programmers were hired.

It was released on 30 September 1999 for Microsoft Windows, and on 22 October 1999 for the PlayStation. It is the fourth title in the Grand Theft Auto series, and the first main entry since 1997's titular Grand Theft Auto. The open world design lets players freely roam Anywhere City, the setting of the game.
