    After many attempts at a revolution against Cuba's leader at the time who was named General Fulgencio Batista, Fidel Castro finally gained control of Cuba.

    As Fidel Castro took over Cuba he began to implement communist policies. He became hostile towards the U.S. and instead turned to the Soviet Union as trade partner and military ally.

    Bay of Pigs Invasion
    The CIA had come up with a way to invade Cuba. The invasion was carried out by some Cuban refugees who had fled their country as soon as Fidel Castro came into power. Unfortunatly the invasion was a failure with the Cuban refugees and their supporters severely out numbered 1,400- 20,00. 1,100 men were captured and imprisoned. Eventually the U.S had to secure the release of the prisoners by paying a $53 million ransom in medicine and food.

  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    The U.S. had sent some espionage military forces to scope out what was happening in Cuba, since the U.S. had seen some close relations between Cuba and the Soviet Union. It turns out that the Soviet Union had been providing Cuba with missies. The U.S. figured out that now Cuba had the missiles and launching capacity to attack the United States. Some of those missiles included nuclear weapons.
  • Resolution of Missile Crisis

    Resolution of Missile Crisis
    Soviet Premier Nikita Krushchev agreed to stop sending missiles to Cuba and to return the missiles already in Cuba to the Soviet Union, as well as dismatling the launching sites. In turn the U.S. agreed to not invade Cuba and secretly agreed to remove U.S. nuclear-armed missiles from Turkey.
