  • 1093

    Alexius Commenus asks for Help

    Emperor Alexius asks for help against the Ottoman Turks who were trying to take over the Byzantine capitial of Constantinople.
  • 1095

    The Pope Responds

    The Pope at the time read a letter in November 1095 asking him for help in the "Holy War" or Crusade. So he told his followers that if they fought and died in the war they would go straight to heaven. About 30,000 of his followers went to Jerusalem to fight.
  • 1095

    A New Group

    Around 1095 a new group of Arabs took over Jerusalem, They closed the city gates to the Jewish and Christians, Than they started to try and invade the Byzantine empire.
  • 1096

    The First Crusade

    When unprepared troops came in with no strategy at all captured the city of Jerusalem and carved into four crusader states. This Crusade lasted from 1096-1099
  • 1147

    Second Crusade

    This Crusade was for the Muslims to retake the city of Jerusalem with their leader Saladin in control. This Crusade lasted from 1147-1149
  • 1189

    The Third Crusade

    This was an attempt by three different kings to retake the "Holy City" of Jerusalem. The third king Richard the Lionhearted respected Saladin to much so he didn't attack Jerusalem. This crusade lasted from 1189-1192
  • 1202

    The Fourth Crusade

    They attack Constantinople instead of Jerusalem they burn down churches and and libraries. They said they needed money to defend their city because they didn't want their state to have the same fate as Jerusalem and they hated the west for a long time because they destroyed their city. This happened from 1202-1204
  • 1212

    The Childrens Crusade

    Thousands of French and German children tried to reach Jerusalem they thought god would help them because they were children but that's not the case. Some of them froze to death and died of hunger. When they reached the Mediterranean sea they though the waters would part ways for them but they wouldn't so they just went back home.
  • 1453

    At the End

    The Christians finally stop trying to invade Jerusalem, the Muslim Turks turned out to be victorious and took over the Byzantine empire in 1453
